President Marcos congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for obtaining a third consecutive term following his victory in the world’s largest democratic election.

“My warmest congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi for securing a fresh mandate from the Indian electorate,” President Marcos said on his official X account.

“The last decade has shown India as a sincere friend to the Philippines, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral and regional partnership in the years ahead,” he added.

Modi’s historic third win marks the first time in over 60 years that an Indian Prime Minister has achieved such a feat.

The Hindu nationalist party of Modi agreed with allies Wednesday to form a government after a general election in which it failed to secure an outright majority for the first time in a decade.

The 15-member National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition—led by Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—has 293 seats in parliament, giving it control of the legislature.

“We all unanimously choose respected NDA leader Narendra Modi as our leader,” a BJP-issued alliance statement said.

The NDA government would “preserve India’s heritage” and work for the “all-round development of the country”, it added.

Election results released Tuesday in the world’s largest democracy upended conventional wisdom throughout the six-week election that Modi’s Hindu nationalist agenda would power him to a landslide win.
