La Loma excited to serve lechon as ‘ber’ months begin

Lechoneros in La Loma, Quezon City – considered as the “lechon capital” in the National Capital Region – are already gearing up for high demand of roast pigs at the onset of the “ber” months.

The country, after all, boasts the title of having the world’s longest Christmas celebration that kicks off in September and culminates until January.

In an interview with Manila Standard, Ramon Ferreros, founder of La Loma Lechoneros Association, said they recognize the significant role they play in Filipino food culture this holiday season.

“When September arrives, the demand appreciates up to 15% already. As December approaches, more and more people are looking for lechon to include in their celebrations,” said Ferreros.

He said La Loma lechoneros serve 15 million residents during birthdays, anniversaries, and parties.

Foreign tourists also visit La Loma to experience our national food, he said.

Ferreros recalled that when hog raisers from Marinduque, Mindoro, and Quezon provinces learned to raise native pigs, the lechon community became even better given that native pigs are tastier and have a crispier skin.

He also highlighted the benefits of using online platforms for La Loma lechoneros to market their products here and abroad.

Filipinos who live in America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East, for example, can send lechon to their loved ones here in the Philippines, he said.

“Lechon is a symbol of success, abundance and family love. When there is no lechon on the table, it feels quite empty. We believe that if there is abundant food every time there is a celebration, our life will also be prosperous,” Ferreros said.

Ferreros, owner of Monchie’s Lechon, also recognized the efforts of the the Department of Agriculture (DA), Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), and Quezon City Veterinary Department to ensure that lechon products in La Loma are ASF-free.

“I can assure you that La Loma is ASF-free. The roastery here went through the strict inspection from the city veterinary department, National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), in addition to the checkpoints of DA and BAI during travel from the provinces,” he said.
